Preparing for Your Incoming Exchange Student
Your exchange student’s arrival is just around the corner! As you get ready to welcome them into your home, remember that perfection is not the goal. It is creating a warm, welcoming environment where everyone can learn and grow together.
Here are a few simple ways to prepare:
- Create a welcoming space. A clean, comfortable room with a place for them to relax and study will help them feel at home.
- Plan a warm welcome. A favorite family meal, a welcome sign, or a small gift can make your student feel like part of the family from day one.
- Share your family routines. Talk about mealtimes, chores, schedules, and house expectations to help everyone adjust.
- Learn about each other’s cultures. Be curious! Sharing traditions, foods, and experiences is one of the best parts of hosting.
- Be patient and flexible. The first few weeks are an adjustment for everyone. Students may need more sleep and time to themselves.
- Enjoy the journey. Hosting is about more than opening your home—it is about sharing your daily lives, caring for your students needs, and creating memories that will stay with you for years to come.
Remember: Hosting a way to put God’s love into action. You are creating space for supportive relationships, cultural understanding, and opportunities to share the love of Christ through your words and actions.
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. — Romans 12:13 (ESV)
Thank you for welcoming and hosting your exchange student. The lessons you share, the memories you create, and the love of Christ you demonstrate can have an eternal impact on both your student and your family.
The AHLI team is excited for you and praying for you!
