As an international student, your exchange year is filled with new experiences—new classes, new friends, a new culture, and new adventures. As the semester gets busy, it can be easy to feel tired, stressed, or a little homesick.
The good news is that you don’t have to do everything perfectly. Small, positive steps can help you finish the semester strong and enjoy the fall season!
Tips for Student Success:
- Stay organized. Keep track of assignments, tests, projects, and important dates. A simple calendar, planner or productivity app can help.
- Focus on one thing at a time. When you have a lot to do, break big assignments into smaller steps.
- Ask questions. If you do not understand something in class, ask your teacher or a classmate for help. Asking questions is part of learning!
- Keep a regular routine. Try to get enough sleep, eat healthy meals, and make time for schoolwork and fun.
- Take breaks. When you study, give yourself short breaks to rest, eat a snack and recharge.
- Take care of yourself. Exercise, spend time outside, listen to music, pray or do something you enjoy.
- Stay connected. Spend time with your host family and friends. Having people around you can make a big difference.
- Celebrate your progress. Take a moment to notice how much you have learned and how far you have come since the beginning of the semester.
Feeling Stressed or Anxious?
It is normal to feel stressed sometimes, especially when schoolwork, friendships, and everyday life feel like a lot. If you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, don’t keep it to yourself.
Talk with your host family, coordinator, teacher, school counselor or another trusted adult. They can listen, encourage you, and help you find solutions.
Simple things can help reduce stress:
- Take a few slow, deep breaths.
- Go for a walk or spend time outside.
- Eat healthy daily, exercise regularly and keep a consistent sleep cycle.
- Take a break from your phone or social media.
- Pray or spend quiet time reflecting.
- Talk to someone you trust.
Remember: Help Is Available
You are not expected to figure everything out on your own. Your teachers, host family, friends, school counselor, and coordinator are here to support you. Tutoring and mental wellness support are available as well.
Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of strength.
Keep Going!
Finishing a semester can be challenging, but you have already accomplished so much. You have learned, adapted, made memories, and grown through your experiences here.
Take it one day at a time, do your best, ask for help when you need it, and remember to enjoy the journey along the way.
You can do this! Finish the semester strong and have fun!
