It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end and your international student’s arrival is right around the corner. In order to help you prepare for this amazing adventure, here are 5 things your family can do to get ready.
- Think about what makes your town unique and make a list of places to take your student to, so they can experience what makes your area special. Maybe it’s a fall festival that the whole town turns out for or the local amusement park that does special holiday activities. Whatever it is, make a list of things to talk to your student about doing together as a family.
- Learn about their culture and have a list of questions to ask them. When you do a little research about their home country and their traditions, your questions are great conversation starters to use to get to know them.
- Make a list of US holidays and their associated traditions. These are things that many students will be looking forward to learning about. It can be a great way to connect with your student and learn how they celebrate holidays in their country. Try to incorporate some of their favorite holiday foods and traditions into yours this year. It will make for wonderful memories and experiences for both of you!
- Make a list of house rules for your student, everything from technology to chores, so you can get on the same page right from the start. Understand that things in your home may be very different, so it might take some time and patience while they adjust.
- Make a welcome sign for the airport and at home. This tells your student you are excited they are here. Remember that they may be nervous about meeting you, so this will help them feel welcome and wanted.
Most of all, get excited! You are about to have a grand adventure and an experience that you and your student will treasure forever! We can’t wait to hear about all the fun things you do this year!
Know that all of us at AHLI will be praying for you, your family and your student. We are so thankful for you and your willingness to host this year!
