10 Ways to Appreciate Your Host Mom on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11, 2025. It’s an important day to show your host mom you appreciate her and all she’s done for you this year.

Here are some simple things you can do for her that will mean the world to her:

  1. Make her a picture booklet of all your favorite memories with her from this year. Moms are notoriously sentimental, so showing her with pictures all the fun times you have had with her will mean a lot to her.
  2. Write her a poem or a letter. Take time to write down your thoughts about how special she is a how much you appreciate all she has done for you this year. She will cherish this.
  3. Do an art project for her. Paint a picture, draw something for her. If you have host siblings, do a collage of all your handprints together with the date on it. She’ll have this forever to remember you by.
  4. Cook for her. Together with your host dad and host siblings make mom her favorite lunch or dinner, so she can sit back and enjoy the day!
  5. Get her flowers and a card. Moms love receiving flowers and cards with sweet notes from their family members in them. It’s a great way to show her how much you care!
  6. Do an activity with her. Whether your host mom likes playing board games, going for a hike, or going to the movies, find an activity you know she enjoys and spend time with her doing it.
  7. Clean for her. Dust, vacuum, mop, clean the bathrooms or clean the kitchen. Moms really appreciate someone else stepping in to help them with all these basic household chores.
  8. Do all the laundry. This is just one more way to show her you appreciate her and want to help with the weekly tasks.
  9. Make a recipe book of all your favorite foods you have shared with her throughout your stay. This is another thing she will be able to use and think of you after you return home.
  10. Give her time to indulge herself. Send her out with friends for the afternoon or evening for some time to herself. All moms enjoy a little “Me Time.”

As you can see, none of these ideas are expensive because for moms all over the world the things that mean the most to them are typically thoughtful things that save them time or activities they can do with you. Moms spend a lot of time taking care of you and making sure you have everything you need.

Proverbs 6:22 says, “When you walk around, their counsel will lead you; when you sleep, they will protect you; when you wake up, they will advise you.” This is talking about mothers and the care they provide for their children all the days of their lives.

Take some time today to show your host mom that you recognize this and appreciate her by giving some of that back to her today. Happy Mother’s Day!
